"Freedom to Know" in Libraries—and What Lies Beyond
Since 2015, I have been organizing "Wikipedia Town" events and mapping parties at public libraries. Through these activities, I have come to see how the perspectives of citizens, the realities of library operations, community development, and local archives are all interconnected through the concept of "open data." Beyond the "freedom to know" that libraries uphold—are citizens the only ones who should be creating maps? Drawing on platforms like Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap, I explore the significance of librarians and citizens working together to document and record their local communities.
